Influenced by the British, a monarchy was set up in 1907 and three down the line a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs. After the British rule came to an end in 1947, this role was assumed by independent India. Bhutan being one of the smallest countries in the world, is not that developed but is presently on the track of development. The economy, of this small and least developed country, is primarily based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 90% of the population.
